Digital Spring Cleaning Tips
Spring is here and in full swing! While the change of season comes with warmer weather, greener grass, and budding trees, it also comes with the dreaded (or maybe very exciting for all you Marie Kondo’s out there) Spring cleaning. With cleaning on our minds, it is only fitting that we talk about cleaning up your digital devices and platforms! Here are a few tips to keep in mind while digital cleaning this Spring.
Update and Store your Passwords
Create and use a password manager if you don’t already. Just like other areas in life, it is important to keep yourself protected from incidents that may compromise your safety and security. Similar to wearing a seatbelt and preventing yourself from the worst, updating your passwords can also prevent you from fraud and those working on the dark web. Every day you continue to use a weak password or opt-out of two-factor authentication you could be inviting data breaches and cyberattacks to your digital devices. There are different types of apps or websites to manage all of your passwords, but a few TSH members swear by LastPass Password Manager. This website offers a free version to keep all of your passwords in one place.
Clean your Browser
Over time, our browsers, similar to our junk drawers and closets, get slower and cluttered because of unused data. In order to get the most speed and your storage space back, delete your browser histories, cached files, and cookies. We all love the concept of convenience and our browser remembering all of our passwords for us, but introducing a little inconvenience in the name of security and cleanliness pays off.
Go Through your Mobile Apps
We’ve all been in our closet thinking “Do I still need that? Or when is the last time I’ve worn that?” When Spring cleaning, add cleaning your phone apps to the list. Often apps are downloaded for a specific purpose, such as apps for travel or entertainment, but after we’re done with them we forget to uninstall them. Just uninstall! You can always reinstall later. By removing unused apps, you are not taxing your device by sharing your location or other unnecessary personal information.
Organize and Store your Photos
We can’t be the only ones who have about 9,000 photos on our phones. Obviously, this is not the most efficient way to store your photos, especially since photos eat up the majority of your storage space. There are many options to back up photos to keep them stored and organized in a separate space from your computer or phone. Maybe it’s using an app like Google Photos or downloading your photos on a hard drive every other month. In 2021, it was estimated that 1.4 Trillion photos were taken around the world and with photo camera quality continuing to improve, this number will likely increase every year! Be proactive, take time to organize your photos before you have too many to sort through.
Whether you’re looking to delete apps or just want more storage on your devices, these tips are a great first step to cleaning up your digital devices this spring!
