TSH Top Picks: Podcasts
By now, we are all familiarized with what podcasts are. Podcasts seem to have sprung up out of nowhere and exploded into the newest way to spice up your commute. In fact, there are now 660,000 active podcasts with over 28 million episodes!! And that number is only growing with the increased popularity of this entertainment medium.
In our opinion, podcasts are a great way to switch things up from the typical playlist and learn a thing or two. The following podcasts are ones we have been raving over lately here at TSH!
SOCIETY & CULTURE
Our first recommendation is from our very own Lead Designer, Kerry. LadyGang gives an honest and hilarious look at what life is really like under the bright lights of Hollywood. With a different celebrity guest star every week and hilarious commentary from hosts Keltie Knight, Jac Vanek, and Becca Tobin, you’re sure to have a laugh and maybe even learn some industry secrets while listening to this show!
This NPR curated podcast is your guide to current culture. Jesse Thorn hosts in-depth interviews with brilliant creators, culture picks from critics and irreverent original comedy. Our Video and Web Producer, Jeff says, "It's my weekly connecting to fringe cultural beauty, also Jesse is my age which helps me instantly feel a connection to him." McSweeney’s has even called this podcast “the kind of show people listen to in a more perfect world.”
MUSIC
The perfect way to combine music and podcasts. Dissect is Digital Media Coordinator Intern, Miranda’s current favorite podcast that picks one album per season and analyzes one song per episode measure by measure, word by word. “I resisted against the podcast trend for quite some time because I’m such a huge music fan, so the reason I love this podcast is because it gives me a way to incorporate music while also gaining a new perspective.”
CRIME STORIES & CURRENT EVENTS
Account Director, Angela says that while she prefers audio books over podcasts, Up and Vanished is her current go-to! This is a true-crime podcast hosted by Atlanta filmmaker Payne Lindsey. With two thrilling seasons, this show aims to tell compelling, true stories and give these cases the exposure they deserve.
BUSINESS & DESIGN
Visual and Graphic Designer, Gabrielle, has us raving about this podcast. 99% Invisible is about all of the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about, the unnoticed architecture and design that shape out world. “They're all super interesting - to the point that I'll end up listening to three or four 40 minute episodes without even realizing it.” How about that for a testimonial!
HOW I BUILT THIS
Lastly we have Creative Director Valerie’s pick. How I Built This is a podcast hosted by Guy Raz that dives into the stories behind some of the world’s best known companies. This podcast weaves a narrative journey about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists- and the movements they built. "I love listening to stories of other companies, how they got started and how they continue to manage their business. Raz always interviews well known companies that most people are familiar with and it's fun to hear the owners talk about their ups and downs."
