Are you in charge of marketing for a business? How do you know if you are reaching the right people and saying the right things? Knowing the answers to these questions is important in creating your marketing plan. This is where keyword research comes into play, especially in the digital world. Nowadays, customers search for a business by typing in words that are related to the business, not by the business name because they may not even know it exists. By identifying these keywords, you are thinking like your target customer and putting your company in front of them so they may discover you easily.

Keyword research is a vital part of not only search engine marketing, but your entire marketing plan. Discovering what your target market is interested in and understanding what they are looking to find online will be important insight while building your marketing strategy. It will guide everything from what content to curate that will attract them, to utilizing the best platform to get your content in front of them.

The first step is keyword discovery and understanding what your target market is looking for. Your business should have keyword phrases that are important to your business but don’t neglect keywords that your potential customers are using to describe your business.

Now, how do you find these words? This brings us to the next point utilizing different tools. A great tool for keyword phrase suggestions is Ubersuggest. It’s a free tool that will provide you a long list of suggested phrases built around a keyword, the search volume of the phrase, competition and cost per click. You can use these suggestions to generate product ideas, your next blog post, website meta-data and more. Utilizing these tools helps enhance your keywords.

Another important and free tool to utilize is Google’s Keyword Planner. This tool allows you to strategically research & utilize your keywords. To find new keywords you can search based on terms that are relevant to your business, your landing page or different product categories. It is also important to observe the search traffic of these keywords and the competition, aka how hard it is to rank for the keyword.

Once you have found keywords and phrases that are based on your business and website, you need to prioritize and refine them. Use your judgment on the relevance of the word or phrase to your product or service. Look for those low monthly search but highly specific long tail keywords that are more likely to attract the right audience to your business. These give you great opportunity to be seen by your target market. Don’t limit keywords to your website search engine optimization. Whether you are writing a newsletter, blog post or using hashtags on your social media posts, use your keywords effectively to help you be found by those who are seeking your product or service.
