Creating Killer Instagram Captions

We’ve all been there, staring blankly at the newest photo you want to share with your audience, but can’t seem to come up with something creative or interesting to say about it.

Creating a caption that’s as carefully curated as your photo can be a serious challenge. Should your Instagram captions be funny? Serious? Inspirational? Should you use emojis or hashtags? And what about your call-to-action?

A good caption is as important, if not more important, than the picture itself. You can stop scrollers in their tracks, grabbing their attention with just your words. Clever captions elevate a feed beyond superficial “pretty images” and can forge a deeper connection with readers, while simultaneously encouraging likes, comments, and even potential visits to your website.

So, now comes the question: what does a well-crafted Instagram caption look like?

An Instagram caption should:

  • explain what the photo is about, while also either encouraging your followers to take action, espousing wisdom

  • add your personality and a voice to the post.

  • #tips and tricks. Teaching your audience something new, or even cracking a joke is what makes your content unique and (more importantly) shareable.

Hook your readers with an attention-grabbing first line! A compelling first line is the best way to get viewers to spend more time on your post. This in turn increases your post engagement, which is vital to Instagram’s algorithm and to help ensure your audience sees any of your future posts.

Here’s a pro-tip: place the attention-grabbing element of your first line before the caption is shortened, so it’s visible in someone’s feed without the viewer having to click the “more” button. If you play your cards right, you’ve piqued their curiosity and now they can’t help but click that “more” button!

So now that you’ve gotten their attention, it’s crucial to follow up with a strong call to action (CTA). Simply asking followers a question can go a long way. Your audience wants to engage with you! Ask them questions that are pertinent to either the post, your business, or any other relevant current events!
